Walking Toward the Storm.

Walking Toward the Storm: A Reflection by Rev. Dr. Sam Wells

Sometimes life falls apart in ways you didn’t see coming. The future you imagined? Gone. Your carefully constructed plans? Scattered. What now?

I sat down with my dear friend, the Rev. Dr. Sam Wells, to ask that very question. Sam has spent his life walking with others through grief, fear, and loss—holding space for the unspeakable pain we can’t fix or explain. And in our conversation, he spoke directly to those raw places in us. He reminded me (and now you) that even when life feels impossible, God will not let us go.

This reflection is about what it means to face what scares us most. Naming the fear. Letting go of what was. Finding just enough courage, trust, and trembling faith to take the next step—even when it feels impossibly hard.

If you’re feeling unmoored (or just very human), I hope this download can be a small gift to carry with you.

Bless you, dear one.

You are Loved

When everything felt like it was falling apart, my sister Maria said, “You are loved. You are loved. You are loved. You are here. You will not disappear.” I held onto those words like a lifeline—and if you need that reminder too, you can download this lock screen and carry it with you, like a little blessing in your pocket

Hi, I’m Kate. Let’s untangle our culture’s obsession with toxic positivity and self help, shall we?

I am a Duke professor, podcaster, and author with a single mission: giving you permission to feel human. (And letting you have whatever weird or boring hobbies you can’t explain to strangers. Do I love roadside attractions and exotic potato chip flavors? Yes. More than I should say.)

I believe that the world would be a better place if we took apart the well-meaning clichĂ©s we use when life is hard. (What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger? Maybe what doesn’t kill you might try again tomorrow. 🙂 )

After years of being told I was incurable, I was declared cancer-free. But there’s no going back. I am forever changed by what I discovered: life is so beautiful and life is so hard. For everyone.

My team at Everything Happens and I create free resources like this one with you in mind. We are determined to create a gentler world for everyone who wants to admit that they are not always “living their best life.” If that’s you, bless you. You’re in the right place.
